Brett, Bear and Blog Tag

Yesterday, the charming* Brett Battles blogged about his new addiction to… blogs and what it’s like to be part of Blogdom. Today’s post has been somewhat commandeered by the influence of the blogging community.

I’ve been threatened, beaten ,coerced…well, okay, just tagged. But first, on Monday, Murderati’s Pari Noskin Taichert will discuss blogging and goals and I participated in her survey for that post, which got me thinking back to my humble beginnings on the blogs.

October 31, 2005
A good day to start a blog

I've never kept a diary, with the exception of when I'm traveling, so why write a blog? Haven't got a flippin' clue, but if I ever figure out a good reason, I'll probably ramble on about it in here at some point.

Today has been one of those mind-blowing days. A manuscript I entered into an unpublished novel competition made the first cut - down to 18 of us. Professional critiquing and marketing advice is headed my way. The real kicker - it's a manuscript nobody's been interested in. I've had agents up the wazoo asking for the other one, but nobody's ever even wanted to look at this one.

So, I have to smile. While one manuscript is sitting on an agent's desk in an undisclosed country (not my own) another has jumped an impressive hoop in a contest in the UK. Go figure. I'd given up on ever getting this one published.

If there's a moral to the story, it's that you should never give up on what you believe in. Some people like Dan Brown and, if you went to Harrogate, you know some don't. Some people like Ian Rankin and apparently most of them don't like Stuart MacBride (they have to spend an evening in the bar with you Stuart, then they'll change their tune!)

You know what I say? Stuff the critics - just find your voice, find your audience, and enjoy your writing (or whatever it is that you do) and don't let anyone stop you. You never know when your break is coming!

Well, we can all see how things have changed! I’m not nearly so kind to Stuart and now I have a book deal for, yep, the one that I’d given up on getting published, and almost no post I make is that short.

Back then, it was just me and the blog, evilkev and Stuart reading it occasionally.

Now, I feel like I’ve become part of this network, a community, and I look forward to catching up with people through their posts and meeting new people online. Amra Pajalic, Angie, and Erich are all people I “met” here recently, and it’s great to discover others around the world with similar goals and dreams, all of us moving towards those goals on our own path, but sharing our experiences.

And if I were to list the crazy email crew, we’d be here all day, but suffice it to say, they keep me entertained and whenever I need a smile, I know exactly where to go. I have been tagged by one of them,JB Thompson (and she tagged a bunch of the others already) so, here we go…

And this is sooooo me

You should have grown up during the twenties

You are cool, sophisticated and hip – even by today’s standards. You like things before they are considered cool, and you like them long afterwards.

Take this quiz at QuizGalaxy.com

So, when should you have grown up? Only thing I don’t like about the 20’s is that was way before the internet.

But I could’a been a flapper.

* Hey, he paid the annual fee so he gets to be charming. It’s that simple @ Sandrablabber. I don't discriminate!

Yeah, I had noticed a certain downward trend in the 'be nice to Stuart' stakes of late.

Typical, just because you get more comments than me...

Quality, quantity... I thought you were old enough to know that size isn't everything?

Charming? Can I quote you on my bio? And even so kindly providing an alternate title for my blog...

The funds have been transfered to your account.

...ugh...it's early here in the land of silicone and other people's money. I know, I know..."transferRed"...double r, man...double r.

Think I should go back to bed...

Gargh. Mine said the 50s. I'm not too sure. But catching up on the last couple of days of posts gave my brain a start of an idea. YAY!!!

Sandra Ruttan said...

Boy Kim, obviously it was a blogger wobble!

Sela, well, at least it got the wheels in motion! (Stuart got the 50's as well, btw)

Sure you can quote me Brett! Just wait until you see what I say about you tomorrow! Now where's my money?

Hey, you tagged me and I thought I was running fast! :0 Gotta work on my speed.

Sandra Ruttan said...

Just you come over here and say that, Kim!

Sorry Andrea, I've got arms like that elasticy chick in the, uh kids movie I can't remember the name of.

The problem with these tags is that the come around. I did this one already, back in January.

Oh well, I suppose I can do it again and see if the answers come out differently.

Sandra Ruttan said...

Reverse the questions James! What four movies make you want to hurl? etc.

That could be fun!

Go figure, it says I should have been born in the present. Does that make me shallow???
As always, S, a great blog. Sometimes looking back at how far we've come is a real eye opener. I want to drag out my first round of query letters sometime, see how many newbie mistakes I made.

Um, **I** started at the BEGINNING of October 2005 and I've only got 1/64th of the blogger visitors you have. Must be because of your sexual innuendo. And you do it so well!

I was tagged with these same ones in February, so I'm gonna go back and find that post, and link it in another post. The answers haven't changed that much. But you're still a doll. Now, Barbie, sit in the corner and shut up! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Sandra Ruttan said...

JT, you aren't shallow. It probably means you're more well adjusted than the rest of us or something!

Barbie, Forrest? Is that why my back hurts...

I started my blog this year and now I wonder how I would do without. You can also rest easy that I am a 20's babe too. I think it was the fedora question that pulled me in

Mindy Tarquini said...

There's a reason you don't visit me everyday?

Sandra Ruttan said...

I don't know Eileen - I picked suit!

Mindy, you don't blog every day. I still drop by tho!

Mindy Tarquini said...

Even if I don't blog, you should still visit, leave a card. You know, like realtors do when they visit houses for sale.

Even a simple 'atta girl!' will do.

I mean, I'd visit you everyday. Even if you weren't home. I'd visit, make myself a bologna and cheese sandwich, put my feet on your coffee table, drink your beer...just so you wouldn't feel forgotten.

Sandra Ruttan said...

Darn you Marquini, okay okay, tomorrow I'll be over for corn beef on rye.

I should grow up in the PRESENT...You like the music, style and mentality of today. Enjoy it while it lasts, because a new decade will soon take over…

The little dog is cute. You can make him bark by clicking your mouse on him...and feed him a biscuit from the bag.

I'm so brain damaged, this is fun!

Blogger is in a snit, so I'm anonymous
