I’m back…. Sort of

I feel confident I’m not the only person who’s noticed that when something goes wrong, life has a way of piling on. A few weeks ago I was talking to a good friend of mine. She was bubbly on the phone, and then started recounting everything that was happening. Everything from their basement flooding to a huge crisis involving their niece to a death in the family – it literally had been thing after thing after thing.

For once, my life seemed quiet by comparison.

The internet was nowhere near as critical as the issues my friend was facing, but it truly was one thing after the other. It went down. We did every diagnostic under the sun and checked on our end – the problem was external. We’re supposed to have next-day repair. It went down Friday, but they weren’t going to come Saturday. Or Sunday. Staff shortages, it’s the weekend, and oh well. Our bills even say service 7 days a week… apparently not.

I had to get grumpy. They finally said they’d come Sunday morning, 11 am.

By 12:45 I was an unhappy person. I had to make another phone call.

They did come. And they did fix it. But this is when I have to say what the hell is the point of providing internet service if you can’t configure your system off a Mac computer? That guy took one look at the 17-inch flat screen in my husband’s office and gave up.

Grrrrrr.

He did configure the equipment. But he couldn’t configure it on our computer. I was left with internet that was supposed to be functioning – and was – I just couldn’t use it.

At least, not the way I’m supposed to.

I had to unplug my computer, take it to Kevin’s office and plug it directly into the dish. And… voila, internet. Until Kevin came home and had to fix things on our end.

So, I was back on, in fits and spurts, but unable to be on for any concentrated period of time.

I’m pleased to say that, four days later and mooching of my sister’s computer involved, I’m back at my own desk, with functioning internet.

If I had made a choice to be away from the internet for four days, I would have had little problem with that. But having the choice made for me was irritating, in the end. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of stuff going on right now, and we’re days out from the next Spinetingler. This was not conducive to getting the web pages ready (they’re uploaded and then the links are put in when it goes live).

But we shall have smiles now. Because we can finally get caught up. Don't expect me to be fully on top of things for a few days - this has put me behind. But it's only put me behind my self-imposed schedule, and if I wasn't so anal I'd be less agitated about it.

Just to make life fun, though, blogger is refusing to let me upload the visual joke I had for today.

You just have to smile. What else can you do?

PS: It is September 11. In many ways, not a day I'm sure what's appropriate anymore. I've shared what I remember and how I felt that day, months ago here on the blog, when they were releasing the first 9/11 movie, but there are many blogs out there paying tribute or talking about the issues. Dave Terrenoire's is one of them.

I love when I have internet problems, and I call the ISP and they start giving me instructions that involve Windows. And I say I'm on a Mac. Just to hear the reaction, since I already know how to handle the situation.

Pause.

"Do you have a Windows computer available?"

"Oh, sure. Let me chase my wife off hers."

Pause.

"Okay, I'm at the Windows computer."

Then they start giving me the instructions, which I translate in my head into the Mac equivalent. The best part is when we're done, I explain how I never left my Mac, and how you can check ping and run tracerte just fine on a Mac, and how the browser interface for the the router runs just fine in Safari or Firefox for Mac. It makes me laugh to listen to their silence and imagine their jaws on their desks.

Bill, we truly are siblings. I love messing with people.

One of my favourite things to do when the same telemarketing number shows up again and again is to click answer, count to ten, then hang up.

I'm evil.

Well, glad you've "sort of" got the 'net back up. Hopefully your tech crap will be straightened out asap.

And yeah, it is hard on 09/11.

Yeah Angie, in a way it should be a stat. Nobody's focused on today, no matter where you go. It seems disrespectful for life to just go on...yet it isn't like Remembrance Day where things actually stop or slow down significantly.

Quite hard to carry on as per normal, like it's any other day.

Don't even get me started on things going wrong-it's been that kind of month. Glad your internet is back-personally, I would of had the jitters after a few hours. As for September 11th, someone I grew up with died in tower two. But after two weeks of tv specials, somehow it's hard to treat the day as special. norby

Gosh Bill: I love that. And, as a fellow Mac user, I will use it. You think you've got it bad with tech support? Just try it when you don't have a penis.

Norby, I think it just gets to the point of overload. It isn't quite as bad here. Sorry to hear of your connection, though.

Linda, ha! Sort of like buying a car or taking the one you have to a mechanic!

Sandra, sorry to hear of your troubles and your friend's.

No fun to have technical difficulties near a deadline, but as a fellow Mac Addict, I am so pleased this gave Bill a chance to post such a great response to people who are stuck in their windows.

I have found that when I insist on talking to a Mac-knowledgeable tech, I get the smartest person on staff anyway. Someone who can do more than read out of a canned responsed manual.

I'm glad you are back and the internet problems fixed.. it's frustrating as hell when fixing something is out of our hands and into someone else's, especially when you know they really could care less.

as for a tech who knows something.. I seem to find even the dumbest pc techs! (one great one ONCE!) Eons ago when I got my first computer an AOL tech had be delete DLL files!..duh.. I know better now!

FYI -- Sandra's lost Internet service again, bear with her until she's back up!

Linda, maybe you could borrow a penis.

Wait, that probably didn't come out the way I intended. But you get my thrust.

Wait,...

*flees on foot*

It is good to have you back!

It's a drag, but mainly it's the minor irritations that leave me upset. A real catastrophe, I swing into action. But the little things hammer at me, until I'm a pool of jelly. (they seem to come in series).

Sandra Ruttan said...

Jack, I think the little things just pile on and sneak up on you, and then become too much. Biggies - we call in the reinforcements, we're mentally/emotionally prepared for a tough time. But one thing after another really wears you down...

LOL...the sun will come out tomorrow *she ducks*

Not around here, it won't, Bonnie. We're officially entering the rainy season, and won't likely see the sun again much before November. Now that gets you down, day after day of low cloud and constant drizzle. Internet not working? Feh!

But I hope you get it fixed soon, Sandra. The place isn't the same without you.
